Monty Python strikes again

I’ve just read about the scandal at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, where over 200 babies and nine mothers died and others were left with appalling injuries and mental trauma. These statistics undoubtedly understate the true picture nationwide.

I’m not the first person to comment that these mummies, bairns and their families were victims of a Modern Midwifery Mantra that ‘natural childbirth is best’ i.e. you go against Mother Nature at your peril. However, it’s more than a mantra; it’s an obsession – an obsession with an unproven theory, a fad. Worse. It’s a moral crusade to teach the world that health professionals and their cronies know best, and the rest of us are ignorant if not morally bereft. They unquestionably believe that experiencing natural childbirth in all its glories (and goriness?) is best for bonding. Mums and dads don’t know that because they haven’t been on the courses, read the books, aren’t immersed in ‘the culture’ so they won’t understand. Never fear. Midwives are here to rescue the uninitiated. Show them the light. Hand them the Holy Grail.

One could argue that the health ‘professionals’’ moral crusade is part of a wider extremist agenda that has hijacked the noble and popular environmental movement. Indeed, Mother Nature herself has been hijacked by zealots. Their agenda is to push, push and keep pushing (well we have just been talking midwives) until we are all closer to nature in every way possible – birth, food, energy, re-wilding. If you don’t give birth naturally, eat organic and vegan, fix solar panels to your roof or dig up the geraniums and replace them with cornflowers, you’re going to hell in a handcart as sure as eggs is eggs (with apologies to vegans).

In fact, moral crusades have been all the rage for a while now. One viewpoint prevails amongst the enlightened, and the rest of us who think differently, even if we’re in the majority with hard evidence, are cancelled. Funny how these moral crusades end up hurting if not killing people. Surely that’s immoral, or am I missing something.

The childbirth scandal is the most recent newsworthy crusade. Still peeking above the newsworthy Horizon is the Post Office scandal (Horizon? Get it?), where the ‘superior’ technophilic elite worshipped the Horizon computer system (NOW you get it!) and cast stones at the inferior sub-postmasters who, by dint of their paganistic technophobia, were bound to be morally bereft thieves and liars and they, and their freedoms, had to be cancelled.

Grenfell. Why believe the lower-income, poorly educated residents when this smart-looking, aesthetically gratifying cladding has got some sort of a professionally endorsed kitemark and is worshipped by public officials. Kitemarks are King, don’t ya know. To question such science and to waste public officials’ time complaining means your views on the safety of your own home must be cancelled. Snuffed out.

Operation Yewtree. Nail-painting, diversity shoe-horning, box-ticking, pension-loving, gong-seeking police officers took their woke-think enlightenment to a new level. They threw the good-coppering rule book onto the fire to leave them free to gleefully believe, perpetuate and indeed worship an anti-establishment narrative. The falsely accused – the establishment – and their loved ones went unheard. They and their reputations were cancelled.

Of course, when it comes to misplaced morals, I have to mention the Bollocks to Brexit banality of hardcore Remainers. Their moral crusade was to overturn the democratic will of the people and the PM’s promises that the vote would be respected. Not only did they consider Brexit-supporters to be intellectually inferior, they said we were morally repugnant because we didn’t bow at the EU temple like ‘good’ people did. In fact, they believed so fervently that they were so good, and that right was so on their side, they tried to cancel 17,410,742 voters, plus the Queen herself!

My final example of a moral crusade that promises the Holy Grail of the Truth, the one Truth and nothing but the one Truth, as long as it’s woke, is Transgenderism. The extreme Trans lobby, as opposed to law-abiding Trans people, refuses to accept anything other than their diktat that there are – what are we up to now? – 68 different genders, including (at least) one for humans identifying as cats. Actually, there’s more than that if you listen to some people, cat-identifyers or not.

“Gender identity is how you feel about yourself and the ways you express your gender and biological sex. Sexuality refers to who you are emotionally, physically, romantically, or sexually attracted to. Gender identity is on a continuum. It’s not just the male/female gender binary—there's a spectrum of gender identity and most people lie in between the binary, with personality traits that relate to gender identity, expression, and biological sex. Gender identity can change over time, and is not fixed.”

This sounds all very accepting and understanding and stress-free for those “on the spectrum” but it also means that your genitals count for nothing. Whether you have a womb (‘female’ – in old-fashioned parlance) or not (‘male’ - ditto) is neither here nor there socially or, increasingly, legally.

The practical ramifications of all this are that ‘females’ (in old-fashioned p – oh to hell with that) yes, females, are being forced out of their safe-spaces and their sports.

The medical ramifications are that many (one is too many) Trans people are taking powerful, harmful, life-changing drugs such as puberty-blockers and voluntarily going under the knife in the most delicate of places. This is tantamount to self-harm. People who self-harm need counselling. To encourage minors to self-harm is child abuse.

And here are two twists in the tale:

1) If the NHS insists that natural is best when it comes to childbirth and breastfeeding, why are the likes of the Tavistock Gender Clinic interfering – dangerously so – with people’s, especially young people’s, natural genitalia and hormone balances?

And

2) If gender identity is fluid over time (see above paragraph), should people be encouraged / allowed / enabled to make significant, irreversible changes to their bodies that they will probably regret later? We’re not talking “‘Tis but a scratch”, you know.

Society has a moral duty to openly and intelligently debate such questions, free from bullying and cancelling and cowardice, for the wellbeing of the vulnerable. We need a moral crusade in support of free speech and intellectual inquiry to help us find the Holy Grail of common sense.
